One day I want a suit like Olivia Pope or Claire Underwood – a power suit that’s unique and bespoke. In the meantime, I’ll satisfy my need for something different and interesting by mixing and matching pieces to make my own creation. I love a bold jacket, like the one I’m wearing here. In addition to the more traditional colors (black, navy and gray), J.Crew’s Schoolboy Blazer comes in a variety of fun hues each season, such as purple, cobalt or hot pink. The Schoolboy also comes in different fabrics depending on the season. I added a yellow velvet Schoolboy to my collection a couple of seasons back, and I really like the options in the summer, which include linen and cotton in patterned fabrics. This blazer is so versatile because you can wear it to work with skirts or trousers, but you can just as easily throw it on with jeans.
To complete my take on a power suit, I paired my purple jacket with this Banana Republic pencil skirt. I love the pattern and the fit of this piece. The high waist and length that hits right below the knee is quite flattering. Banana Republic has really stepped up its game recently with new creative director, Marissa Webb, and I can’t get enough of the new line. It’s no longer boring, and you can find nice touches like leather detailing on dresses and skirts, as well as many other fashion-forward pieces at an affordable price point. I picked up this skirt, along with a few other pieces, at the most recent 40% off sale.
I love that this outfit easily transitions to after hours events because usually I don’t have time to change before heading to happy hours or dinner. It’s as simple as taking off the blazer! I wore a soft vintage cotton tee underneath the blazer that I tucked into the skirt. The baby blue pairs well with the purple blazer but still looks great with the black and white pattern of the skirt once the blazer is removed.
For the accessories, I wore a lilac and coral necklace from J.Crew Factory. This particular piece was a lovely gift, and I’ve been able to find some other really great pieces from there too. A pair of black patent leather Louboutins and my Kate Spade snakeskin wallet (that doubles as a clutch) completed my look. I love pieces like this wallet that you can throw into your work tote and pull out for lunch or happy hour when you don’t want to lug your tote around with you.
I hope your week is off to a great start!
